Key takeaways

  • Driveways cost about $6.50–10.50 per sq ft installed (Concrete Network).
  • 4 in suits cars; 5–6 in suits trucks and RVs.
  • Most driveways need one 8–12 yd³ ready-mix truck (NRMCA).
  • Drive on new concrete after about 7 days (Concrete Network).

How Much Does a Concrete Driveway Cost?

A concrete driveway costs about $6.50 to $10.50 per square foot installed, according to Concrete Network's national range. A 20×20 ft driveway (400 sq ft) therefore costs $2,600–$4,200, and the concrete alone is $869–$1,059 at $160 to $195 per cubic yard.

Prices change with mix strength, order size and delivery distance, so treat the range as a starting point and enter your local price in the calculator.

How Much Concrete Do I Need for a Driveway?

You need the driveway's length × width × thickness, divided by 27, plus 10% extra. A 40×12 ft driveway 4 in thick holds 160 ft³, which is 5.93 yd³ (4.53 m³). With 10% extra, the order is 6.52 yd³, which fits one 8 to 12 yd³ ready-mix truck.

Concrete Driveway Formula

Cubic yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × (Thickness (in) ÷ 12) ÷ 27

Measure a curved or flared driveway in rectangles and add them together with the calculator's "Add another part" button.

How Thick Should a Concrete Driveway Be?

A residential concrete driveway should be at least 4 in (10 cm) thick for passenger cars, and 5 or 6 in (13 or 15 cm) for trucks and RVs, according to Concrete Network. Four inches is enough for cars; going to 5 in adds 25% more concrete.

What PSI Concrete for a Driveway?

Driveway concrete needs at least 2,500 psi in negligible weathering regions, 3,000 psi in moderate regions and 3,500 psi in severe regions, under 2021 IRC Table R402.2 for carport and garage slabs. In moderate and severe regions, the code also asks for 5 to 7 percent entrained air.

How Many Concrete Trucks for a Driveway?

A ready-mix truck carries 8 to 12 cubic yards (NRMCA), so most residential driveways need one truck. A 20×40 ft driveway at 6 in needs 16.30 yd³ with extra, or 2 trucks at 12 yd³. Counting trucks at 12 and 8 yd³ is this calculator's own rule.

Bags or Ready-Mix for a Driveway?

A driveway almost always needs ready-mix, because even a one-car driveway passes 1 yd³, the switch point that is this calculator's own rule. A 10×20 ft driveway at 4 in takes 2.72 yd³ with extra, which is 123 bags of 80 lb mix.

Do You Need Gravel Under a Concrete Driveway?

A compacted gravel base is standard under driveways because it drains water and spreads loads; the 2021 IRC asks for a 4 in base course under house slabs below grade (R506.2.2). Soil and frost conditions set the depth locally.

Worked Examples: Three Driveways

One-car driveway, 10×20 ft at 4 in. 10 × 20 × 0.333 = 66.67 ft³ = 2.47 yd³; with 10% extra, 2.72 yd³. Concrete costs $435–$530; installed, about $1,300–$2,100.

Two-car driveway, 20×24 ft at 5 in. 20 × 24 × 0.417 = 200 ft³ = 7.41 yd³; with 10% extra, 8.15 yd³, one truck. Installed: about $3,120–$5,040.

Long driveway, 12×100 ft at 4 in. 400 ft³ = 14.81 yd³; with 10% extra, 16.30 yd³, or 2 trucks at 12 yd³. Installed: about $7,800–$12,600.

How to Measure a Driveway for Concrete

  1. Measure length along the center line in feet.
  2. Measure width at several points and use the average.
  3. Split flares and curves into rectangles and triangles.
  4. Add each part in the calculator and keep 10% extra.

How Long Before You Can Drive on a New Driveway?

You can usually drive and park a car on a new concrete driveway 7 days after placement, and RVs or large trucks after at least 28 days, according to Concrete Network. See how long concrete takes to cure.
